The condition is treated by reshaping of the femoral neck (femoral osteoplasty), trimming down of the pincer deformity, repair of labral tears and cartilage lesions. This was first done as an open surgical dislocation of the hip.
An arthroscopic technique has been developed which is less invasive and offers faster recovery. At the present time few studies are available about the efficacy of the treatment. M Phillipon reports a 93% return to sportive activities in professional athletes following FAI surgery. If osteoarthritis is already present a less positive outcome has to be expected.
The top x-ray illustrates the CAM deformity (arrow) which has been removed arthroscopically (bottom picture).
Following the arthroscopic procedure patients use crutches for 3-6 weeks. Cycling on a stationary bike is allowed from the first day.
