Implants

The femoral component of the implant is made of a metal stem with a ball (ceramic or metal) on the end. The acetabular component is a metal shell with an inner liner (ceramic, polyethylene or metal) that acts like a bearing.

We are currently using two uncemented implant systems which aim to minimise bone and soft tissue distruction during the surgery. One of the main goals in hip replacement is to reconstruct the biomechanical features of the joint in order to allow for development of an improved gait pattern.

Implant characteristics as outlined by the manufacturers can be reviewed in the surgical techniques brochures. If you refer to these documents please remember that they are designed for physicians. We combine the Fitmore (TM) stem with an Allofit (TM) cup or the Corail (TM) stem with a Pinnacle (TM) cup.

For professional information on stem implant design please refer to my publication in Current Orthopaedics.
