History

“Resurfacing” mould arthroplasty was first used in 1923 inserted by Smith-Petersen at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The success story of stemmed hip replacement suppressed the idea of femoral head surface replacement until Derek McMinn picked it up again in the 1980ies, re-designing the implant (Birmingham-Hip). At the same time Halan Amstutz developed the Conserve Hip System. Metal on metal surface replacements have since produced satisfactory short/middle term functional results. Research led to improvements in what was previously known as a treatment with a comparatively high failure rate. Articular Surface Replacement (Resurfacing) of the hip joint has found increasing acceptance mainly since computer assisted surgery was introduced for this procedure.
